A Message from Peter Abbott

Welcome to the BABCNE website!

2022 holds real potential to be a bumper year for the UK in New England, the region of America with the deepest and longest-lasting ties to the United Kingdom. As we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we also look forward to a great year for sport (with the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham) and for arts and culture (with the launch of UNBOXED, a year-long celebration of British creativity).

I also hope that 2022 will see greater levels of trade and investment between the UK and New England.  The new year opened with great news about the UK’s expanding fintech sector – total investment into the UK in this sector jumped 217% in 2021 with more than 10% of deals worldwide now landing on UK soil – which promises great things for companies in the sector in New England, too.  I also hope that 2022 will see us formally launch the new insurtech corridor between Connecticut and the UK, designed to help businesses take advantage of our two world-leading insurance ecosystems.

We will also be continuing our programme of visits to Massachusetts’ “Gateway Cities” to better understand how their experiences can contribute to the leveling up and Build Back Better agendas in the US and the UK, setting out a new ambitious climate and clean energy strategy designed to build on the momentum of COP26 and continuing to promote deeper ties in science and technology, including through the launch of Boston as part of the UK’s new Global Talent Network.

I look forward to collaborating with existing BABCNE members – and prospective ones too! – on all of this and more throughout the course of 2022.

Announcement:
NEW ENGLANDERS IN THE QUEENS
NEW YEARS HONORS

The British Consulate was delighted to successfully nominate two leading Brits from New England in Her Majesty’s New Year’s Honors list.

We congratulate Melanie Ivarsson and Alan Lowden for recognition by The Queen for their dedicated and ongoing services to transatlantic Life Sciences and Offshore Wind market development respectively.

Melanie Ivarsson, Senior Vice President, and Chief Development Officer at Moderna, received an OBE in recognition of her services to public health during the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to joining Moderna in early 2020, Melanie worked as Head of Global Clinical Operations at Takeda, Head of Clinical Programs at Shire and held a variety of positions at Pfizer. Prior to joining Pfizer, she worked as an Associate Clinical Development Consultant with Eli Lilly in Windlesham, UK, and holds degrees from MIT and the University of Bristol. Throughout the pandemic, Melanie has been a firm friend of the Consulate and is committed to deepening UK-US collaboration in the health and life sciences sectors.

Dr. Alan Lowdon, Director of Strategic Development for the National Offshore Wind Institute (NOWI) at Bristol Community College in Massachusetts, received an OBE in recognition of the tremendous contribution he has made to support the growing offshore wind industry in New England. NOWI is the first of its kind in the US and Alan has been involved in almost every aspect of its development. He was previously Director of Technology and Innovation at the UK’s National Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) where he led joint initiatives with NREL and helped to secure in excess of $75M from UK Government and private partners to develop the world’s largest offshore wind test and demonstration asset base.
