Strengthening Ties Between Liverpool City Region and Boston: A Growing Partnership in Health & Life Sciences and Beyond, January 2025

In recent months, the Liverpool City Region (LCR) has deepened its ties with Boston, Massachusetts, with a shared focus on innovation, business development, and cultural exchange. This growing partnership is centered around key sectors like Health & Life Sciences, bolstered by connections to some of the most influential figures and institutions in both cities.

The relationship between LCR and Boston took a significant step forward during the Metro Mayors Trade and Investment mission to the U.S. in October 2024. This initiative was part of a broader strategy to strengthen economic, business, and civic relationships with key U.S. cities.

Boston was chosen as a focal point of this mission due to its robust ties with Liverpool, including longstanding collaborations with local institutions such as the University of Liverpool's Civic Health Innovation Lab and a growing presence of both U.K. and U.S. businesses looking to expand internationally. Boston also represents a key hub for the Health & Life Sciences sector, which is a priority area for both cities.

The mission’s timing couldn’t have been better, coinciding with the strong partnership between the owners of Liverpool Football Club, Fenway Sports Group—who also own the Boston Red Sox. This relationship provided an invaluable bridge for deeper civic and business connections between the two regions. During the visit, Liverpool’s leadership, including Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, engaged in discussions with local Boston officials, including Mayor Denise Simmons of Cambridge, Massachusetts. These high-level exchanges are laying the groundwork for future collaboration on civic and economic issues.

Beyond these formal meetings, the visit also focused on fostering relationships within the Health & Life Sciences sector, an area of shared strength between both cities. The Department for Business and Trade’s Boston team played a critical role in facilitating company meetings and organizing the Boston Biotech Brits reception, which provided opportunities for companies from both regions to network and explore potential partnerships.

In addition to the business-oriented meetings, the mission also extended into discussions around cultural exchange, tourism, and sports, further highlighting the diversity of the collaboration. These meetings helped to build a broader understanding of the shared goals between Boston and Liverpool City Region, with a particular emphasis on mutual economic growth, investment, and knowledge exchange.

The momentum from October’s visit was quickly carried forward with an exciting follow-up event in December. Invest Liverpool City Region sponsored a table at the prestigious British American Business Council of New England’s Christmas lunch, where Matt Biagetti, Cluster Lead for Health & Life Sciences in LCR, hosted a table inviting key contacts from the Mayor’s October trip. A highlight of the event was a Liverpool-themed raffle that included prizes such as an LFC shirt, hotel stays, restaurant vouchers, and tickets to top local attractions—showcasing the best of what Liverpool has to offer.

Looking ahead, the collaboration between Boston and Liverpool City Region is poised to grow even further. One of the next major milestones will be LCR’s participation in Bio International Boston in June 2025, one of the largest biotech conferences in the world. This event will offer both cities the opportunity to reconnect, expand their networks, and continue fostering partnerships in the thriving Health & Life Sciences sector. LCR plans to host its own reception during the event to further build relationships with U.S.-based biotech companies and investors.
